What still needs to be looked at urgently ?

Certain issues require urgent attention and action. This list of issues includes (but is by no means limited to):

  • Collection of information on the health impacts of air quality;
  • Conservation and protection of certain species of flora and fauna in the province that are in danger of becoming extinct and formal protection of the centres of endemism within the province;
  • Conservation of areas of high intrinsic biodiversity importance in the province;
  • Management of medicinal plant use and harvesting from the wild;
  • Management of the disposal of hazardous waste in Mpumalanga and provision of landfill airspace in the near future, particularly in the Lowveld and escarpment region;
  • Maintenance of a balance between industrial and economic growth in the province and growth of the provincial tourism industry;
  • Protection of land in areas where desertification is a high risk;
  • Available water resources per capita in the Usutu and Upper Vaal water management area (WMAs) are below stressed and chronic thresholds indicating water stress;
