Over the past three decades, the decline and
extinction of species has emerged as a major global environmental
issue. Reductions in species' numbers or extinctions is not only a
loss of the intrinsic value of the species, but may also impact on
the collective species' ability to provide valuable ecosystem
services such as water purification, erosion control and flood
attenuation (UNEP, 2002).

| Assessment of
Data |
This indicator reports on the number of
species categorised according to the IUCN (International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) red data categories
(IUCN, 2000) as Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically
Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened
(NT), Least Concerned (LC), Data Deficient (DD) and Not Evaluated
(NE) per taxonomic group for the province. The taxonomic groups
covered by this indicator include plants, mammals, birds, fish,
reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The data is too
comprehensive to present here and a summary is therefore only
provided here. Full details of the status of threatened and
extinct species per taxonomic group can be obtained in the
full report or by downloading this information via the
adjacent link.
