Total General Waste Produced per capita per year

Introduction

Information on the amount of general waste produced per capita per year is not routinely collected in South Africa at this time and the information portrayed here is therefore from a once off study conducted as part of a baseline assessment in preparation for the development of a National Waste Management Strategy (DWAF, 1998).

Assessment of Data

Mpumalanga Province contributes 9% of South Africa's general waste stream and although the province generates the fourth highest volume of general waste in the country, it has the third highest per capita waste generation of 1.37 m3 / capita / year, higher than the national average of 1.04 m3 / capita / year. The volume of waste generated (m3 / year) per province in South Africa is displayed in the table below (DWAF, 1998; Stats SA, 2002).
