Information on the volumes of waste re-used,
reduced and recycled is not readily available in South Africa due to
current lack of provincial and national waste information systems.
Information on waste recycling activities was sought from various
recycling agents in Mpumalanga through the 2002/2003 Yellow Pages,
the telephone book and internet search as no formal list of
recycling agents could be
found.

| Assessment of
Data |
From an estimated twenty recycling agents,
information was only obtained for three agents in the province and
the monthly averages are provided in the table below in tons
per month (Tpm) (Muller, 2003). The information provided here
is therefore likely to provide a somewhat skew picture of the real
situation with regards to recycling, reduction and re-use of waste
in Mpumalanga. It is also very difficult to ascertain what trends
are evident in the province with regards to recycling of waste in
the absence of such data. Due to the potential income generation by
the low income groups, recycling figures are expected to continue
to increase, although it is difficult
to estimate the percentage of material recycled to that produced but
is critical in gauging the success of national waste minimisation
programmes.
